Mouthwash – Why you Should Avoid Commercial Ones (and a Better Natural Alternative)

Just saw a current affairs TV commercial the other night about new research showing the hazardous effects of commercial mouthwashes. It mentioned how these mouthwashes kill good bacteria in the mouth thus preventing blood vessels there from relaxing and thus increasing the risk of things like heart attack.

Sounds pretty extreme, but seriously why anyone on earth would put that stuff in their mouth is beyond me. While it’s the first research I’ve heard about the detrimental effects of such things, it is certainly no surprise to me. Without going into the ingredients in details, the next time you open your medicine cabinet or go to the supermarket, just consider the colour of these products. Most are bright blue, green or brown in colour. They look about as natural as the blue toilet dyes used in toilets or Hollywood cleavages! Seriously, just looking at these things should make you question the benefits of swishing them around in your mouth (that’s the mouthwash I’m taking about!).

You might say that there are full of germ-killing and harmful bacteria destroying ingredients that may them good for our oral hygiene. I would say that that might be true but there are also unnatural products that actually are now starting to see may not necessary be conducive to our over-all health. Rather than argue the benefits of drinking some strange fluorescent liquid, my suggestion to you is if you want to look after your oral hygiene without any negative side effects, as well as a number of additional benefits, such as strengthening your gums and teeth, helping prevent mouth and throat cancers and improving your sense of taste, do like I do, and instead use the world’s best natural mouthwash ……… Sesame oil!

That’s right. Cold-pressed sesame oil has been used in the ancient Vedic traditions for thousands of years (it is clearly mentioned in the 6000 year old ancient text of Ayurveda – Charaka Samhita) for use in doing a daily mouth and throat gargle.

SUGGESTIONS:

  • Keep some cold-pressed sesame oil in a little plastic sauce bottle in your bathroom and after brushing your teeth, put 4 or 5 teaspoon of oil in your mouth, first gargle it for 20 – 30 seconds before swishing it around in your mouth and between your teeth and spitting it out. Then simply rinse your mouth out with clean water.

  • Look to incorporate a daily sesame oil mouthwash and gargle after a daily tongue scrape

  • Make your own natural toothpaste while you’re at it. If you like the idea of using natural things rather than chemically-laden commercial ones (Ala mouthwash and toothpaste) you may like to make your own homemade toothpaste. I’ll put good money on that at some point in the future, studies come out showing the detrimental effects of commercial, chemical and fluoride-laden toothpaste.

Anyway, here’s a little recipes that I use if of interest;

NATURAL HOMEMADE TOOTHPASTE RECIPE

  • 1/2 cup bi carb

  • 1 tspn ground unrefined rock or sea salt

  • 12 drops peppermint oil,

  • 6 drops tea tree oil

  • 6 drops eucalyptus oil
